Unpopular Opinion: The Fisherman Aesthetic Is Just ’90s Ralph Lauren With a PR Team
When did dressing like your dad on a dock become subversive?
Lately I’ve seen a lot of talk about the “fisherman aesthetic” - as if this is some fresh, forward trend we’ve never seen before. Boxy knits, waxed jackets, clunky shoes, oversized pockets. The vibe is “retired on a rocky coastline” with a budget.
Let’s be honest: this isn’t new. It’s just 1990s Ralph Lauren Sportsman rebranded (minus the polish, the dog, and the full-page print ad). Back then it was field-ready prep.
Now it’s a bucket hat, a big sweater, and someone pretending a raincoat is a personality.
Don’t get me wrong: I love a microtrend. Fashion’s always been circular.
Authentic ’90s and Y2K pieces are some of the most sought-after items right now.
But that doesn’t mean we need to stop being creative and pretend every rain jacket revival is a revolution.
What do you think… is the fisherman aesthetic a real trend or just rainy day cosplay?
Anyway. Rant over.
Stay dry out there. ☔️
